Start by answering a few questions:
- What kinds of people do you ride with and what do they ride?
- What kinds of places would you like to ride your bike? (mountains, road, trails, etc.)
- If you have ridden before, what did you like/dislike about the bike you rode?
- How much money are you comfortable spending? Are you looking for entry level, middle of the road or
high end product?
Analyzing Your Preferences
If you're buying a bike to ride with a group of friends buy something similar to what they ride. Typically, you won't
be able to keep up with road bikes if you're on a mountain bike or cruiser. And a road bike can't handle
mountains or trail riding like a mountain bike could. A hybrid or cruiser is a great choice if you will just be riding
around town.
Visit your local bike shop and learn about the different bicycles available and think about where and how you'll
ride. You will start to get a picture about what type of bike is best for you. Here's a snapshot of the different
types that are available.
Basic types of bike that are available
Road bikes are quick and pedal easily on pavement, yet they are not well suited for operating off road. For
some, the low riding position of the dropped handlebars is uncomfortable, however there are road bikes
designed, as well as stem adjustments that can be made to get the handlebars significantly higher so you don't
have to bend over so far.
Mountain bikes are slower on pavement but because they have an upright riding position with flat handlebars
and easily accessed controls, they can travel easily on a wide variety of surfaces. They have fat, flat-resistant
tires, low gearing for easy climbing and excellent braking in all conditions. Most have front or front and rear
suspension for incredible comfort and control as well as being very durable and reliable. They are great for
getting around town when high speed is not a factor and for riding in the mountains and on trails as well.
Hybrids or cross bikes are almost as fast and easy to pedal as road bikes, while being almost as
comfortable and versatile as mountain bikes. They're great for commuting around town, errands, getting in
shape and all-around fun.
Comfort bikes are just that — comfortable. They are less efficient, but sitting on one is super comfortable
thanks to an upright riding position, wide handlebars, suspension, easy gearing and a plush seat. Plus, they
typically have easily accessed controls and fat flat-resistant tires. These work best for a slow leisurely ride when
speed and negotiating rugged terrain is not a factor.
Cruisers (sometimes called "beach cruisers") are similar to comfort bikes, fun to look at and, when ridden at a
relaxed pace, ideal for admiring the scenery, and exploring the neighborhood or shore.
Keep in mind that even within these categories, there can be sub-categories of bicycles. For example, there are
mountain bikes specifically designed for jumping and road machines specifically built for time trials and
triathlons. The choices are endless!
